Southern Elephant Seal

Description:

The most notable feature on the adult Southern Elephant Seal is the elephant-like proboscis. Normally limp, it becomes inflated and acts as a resonating chamber when bulls roar at each other. Male elephant seals are quite large, typically 4.5 - 6.5 m (15 - 21 ft) long and weighing 3700 kg (over 8000 lbs). Females are somewhat smaller, typically 2.5 - 4.0 m (8 - 13 ft) long, and weighing between 359 - 800 kg (791 - 1800 lbs). Both sexes frequently produce loud belching sounds that can last several seconds. And, take it from me. They have very, VERY bad breath!
